A Serengeti safari from Zanzibar, without losing days on the road

A 07:00 flight from Zanzibar lands at Seronera airstrip in the central Serengeti at 10:00, and your game drive starts on the way to camp. By road, the same journey takes well over a day each way.

Serengeti from Zanzibar is a licensed Tanzanian tour operator based in Arusha. We run the northern circuit ourselves, in our own branded vehicles, rather than passing you to a third party. Every departure is private: your own 4x4 with a pop-up roof and your own resident guide.

Return flights, transfers, full board accommodation, and all park and concession fees are inside one quoted price. See what a Serengeti safari from Zanzibar costs or read our Zanzibar travel guide.

We rebuild your trip

We rebook you, rework the itinerary around the time left, and refund at cost anything you did not use.

First extra night covered

If you are held overnight in the Serengeti through nobody’s fault, we pay that night in full: room, meals, park fees, vehicle and guide.

Our fault, no limit

If the delay is ours, we cover everything that follows.

What we tell you before you book

We would rather tell you a trip is not worth your money than sell it to you.

Day trips are poor value

About three hours of game viewing, and park fees are charged per 24 hours. One night changes everything.

No guaranteed crossings

The herds follow the rain. Anyone promising a Mara crossing on your dates is guessing.

Children are not half price

Park fees halve for ages 5 to 15, but flights and camps charge adult rates.

Peak season fills early

Northern camps are small. For July to October, book early.

Best time for a Serengeti safari from Zanzibar

Resident lion, leopard, elephant and giraffe live in the central Serengeti all year. The Great Migration moves continuously.

Serengeti seasons and where the Great Migration herds are
Calving seasonDecember to MarchHerds on the southern plains near Ndutu, with calves and predators.
Green seasonApril to JuneLush country and fewer vehicles as the herds move north.
Crossing seasonJuly to OctoberMara River crossings in the north near Kogatende.
Short rainsNovemberHerds drift south. Good light and a quieter park.

No operator can guarantee a river crossing on your dates. See the Great Migration calendar.

Serengeti safari from Zanzibar: common questions

How do I get from Zanzibar to the Serengeti?

By air. Scheduled flights leave Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar at 07:00 and land at Seronera airstrip in the central Serengeti at 10:00. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and game viewing starts on the drive to camp. By road the same journey takes well over a day.

How long does the flight take?

Three hours, Zanzibar to Seronera. Safari aircraft call at bush airstrips according to bookings, so exact times are firmed up about 24 hours before you travel and we pass them on as soon as we have them.

When is the best time to go?

The central Serengeti holds resident lion, leopard, elephant and giraffe all year, so there is no bad month. For the Mara River crossings, travel between July and October. For the calving season on the southern plains, December to March.

The migration itself is continuous. What is seasonal is the crossings.

Can I do the Serengeti as a day trip from Zanzibar?

You can, but we would rather you did not. A one-day fly-in gives about four hours on the ground, of which roughly three is actual game viewing, and the park fee is charged per 24 hours regardless of how long you stay. The value per dollar is poor.

If you can free up a single night, the two-day trip adds an afternoon, a night and a morning for a fraction more.

What is included in the price?

Return flights between Zanzibar and the Serengeti, all airport and airstrip transfers, full board accommodation at the named camp or lodge, a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof and a resident guide exclusive to your party, all park entry and concession fees, drinking water in the vehicle, lunch on every full day, and all government taxes.

Not included: international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, alcoholic and soft drinks, and optional extras such as a balloon safari.

Will I be sharing the vehicle with strangers?

Never. Every safari on this site is a private departure — your own vehicle, your own guide, nobody else in the row behind you. There are no seat-in-vehicle options.

How much luggage can I bring?

15kg per person in a soft bag. That is a hard limit on safari light aircraft rather than a guideline, and hard-shell suitcases will not fit in the hold. Leave the rest at your Zanzibar hotel — most lodges do same-day laundry.

Can children come?

Yes. Children aged 5 to 15 pay half the park and conservation fees; under-fives pay none and carry no vehicle charge. Flights and accommodation are charged at the adult rate at every age, because that is what the airline and the camp charge us.

A child aged 5 to 15 works out at roughly 88 to 96 per cent of the adult price on a fly-in safari. The airfare and the jeep seat are most of the bill and neither halves for a child.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We rebook you, rebuild the itinerary around the time you have left, and refund at cost anything you did not use. If you are held overnight in the Serengeti through nobody's fault, we cover your first extra night in full — accommodation, meals, park fees, vehicle and guide. If the delay is ours, we cover everything that follows without a limit.

The full policy is published on this site.

How far ahead should I book?

The northern camps are small and peak-season space goes early. If you are travelling between July and October, book as far ahead as you reasonably can. Outside those months there is usually more flexibility.
