Zanzibar travel guide

Best time to visit Zanzibar

Warm year-round, but the seasons still matter — for rainfall, prices, diving visibility, and how the trip lines up with a Serengeti safari.

Zanzibar is warm year-round, so the real question isn't "when is it warm enough" but which season fits your priorities — driest weather, lowest prices, best diving visibility, or lining up with a specific part of the Serengeti's wildebeest migration if you're combining the trip with a safari.

The two dry seasons

June to October — Kusi (south monsoon)

Generally considered the most reliable stretch of dry, breezy weather, and Zanzibar's peak tourist season as a result. Expect warm days, lower humidity than the wet months, and the busiest resorts and highest prices of the year, especially around July and August. This period overlaps the Serengeti's Mara River crossings (roughly July through October), making it a popular window for travellers combining both halves of the trip.

December to February — Kaskazi (north monsoon)

A second dry season, generally hotter and more humid than the June–October window, with calmer seas and warmer water — good for swimming and diving. This period overlaps the Serengeti's calving season (roughly December through March), another popular safari-combination window, and includes the Christmas and New Year period, which brings its own price premium and higher demand for both flights and accommodation.

The two wetter seasons

March to May — Masika (long rains)

The wettest stretch of the year, with heavier, more sustained rainfall and higher humidity. Some smaller hotels and restaurants close temporarily for maintenance during this window. It's also the quietest and often cheapest time to visit, with lower prices and fewer crowds for travellers who don't mind the possibility of rain interrupting beach days — though it rarely rains all day, every day, and many visitors still enjoy a trip in this window. If a Serengeti safari is part of the plan, check flight schedules specifically, since some routes reduce frequency during this period.

November — Vuli (short rains)

Brief, typically scattered afternoon showers rather than sustained rain, with plenty of sunshine still mixed in — often a reasonable middle-ground choice for travellers wanting lower prices without the heavier rains of March–May. On the safari side, this is when the migration herds are generally drifting south through the central Serengeti.

Choosing based on what matters most to you

  • Lowest prices and fewest crowds: March–May, accepting a real chance of rain.
  • Best diving and snorkelling visibility: generally the calmer, drier months, with many divers favouring the January–February and July–October windows — see our Diving & Snorkelling page for more detail.
  • Combining with the Mara River crossings: July–October.
  • Combining with the Serengeti calving season: December–March, particularly December to February for the most reliable conditions on both sides of the trip.
  • Avoiding the highest prices: steer away from late December through early January, and the busiest weeks of July–August, if budget is the main driver.

If you're also considering Ramadan's impact on daytime dining and hours outside hotel compounds, check our Ramadan in Zanzibar page, since the Islamic calendar shifts roughly 10–11 days earlier each year and doesn't map onto a fixed Gregorian-calendar season.

Temperature expectations year-round

Because Zanzibar sits close to the equator, temperature swings less by season than rainfall does. Daytime highs typically sit in the high 20s to low 30s °C (mid-80s to high-80s °F) essentially year-round, with the hottest, most humid stretch generally falling in the December–March window and slightly cooler, breezier conditions during the June–October dry season. Evenings are pleasantly warm rather than genuinely cool at any time of year, so pack light, breathable clothing regardless of when you travel — see our Dress Code page for the fuller picture on what to pack.

How prices move with the seasons

As a general pattern across the industry — exact figures vary by property and change year to year — accommodation and flight prices in Zanzibar tend to follow demand fairly closely: highest around the Christmas/New Year period and the peak July–August window, moderate during the shoulder months of June, September, October, and December (excluding the holiday weeks), and lowest during the April–May long rains. If budget flexibility matters more than guaranteed dry weather, the shoulder and low seasons are worth serious consideration, particularly for travellers who don't mind an occasional rain shower interrupting a beach day.

Quick answers

What's the single best month to visit Zanzibar?

There's no single universally "best" month — it depends on your priorities (price, crowds, diving conditions, safari combination). July–September and January–February are generally the most reliable weather windows.

Is it a bad idea to visit during the rainy season?

Not necessarily — rain is usually intermittent rather than constant, and the trade-off is meaningfully lower prices and fewer crowds.

When should I visit to combine with the Great Migration?

July–October for the Mara River crossings, or December–March for the calving season — see our Great Migration guide.
