Zanzibar travel guide

Zanzibar diving & snorkelling

From a first snorkel over a shallow reef to certified dives at Mnemba Atoll — here's where to go and what to expect.

Zanzibar sits within one of the Indian Ocean's richer coral reef regions, and diving and snorkelling are genuine highlights for many visitors — from a first-time snorkel over a shallow reef to advanced certified dives around Mnemba Atoll's walls and drop-offs.

Where the best sites are

Mnemba Atoll

Widely regarded as Zanzibar's premier dive and snorkel destination — a small private island surrounded by a protected marine conservation area, known for vibrant coral, a wide diversity of reef fish, and regular sightings of green turtles and, at times, dolphins. Best reached from the north-east coast (Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani), which sits closest to the atoll.

Leven Bank

A more advanced dive site further offshore, known for larger pelagic species and a different profile of marine life than the shallower reef sites, generally suited to experienced divers.

Kizimkazi and the south

Better known for dolphin encounters than reef diving specifically, sometimes combined into a single boat trip that includes both a dolphin-watching component and a snorkelling stop.

Around Stone Town and Prison Island

More accessible, shallower sites, reasonable for beginners or a shorter add-on to a Stone Town day, though generally less spectacular than Mnemba for a dedicated diving trip.

Diving: certification levels and what's available

Zanzibar has a well-established diving industry with several PADI-affiliated dive centres offering everything from beginner "discover scuba" introductory dives (no certification required, run under close instructor supervision) through to full Open Water certification courses and advanced/specialty courses for already-certified divers. If you're already certified, bring your certification card, and check with your chosen dive centre about equipment rental vs. bringing your own gear.

Snorkelling: what to expect

Snorkelling trips, typically run by boat out to reef sites like Mnemba, require no certification or prior experience — reasonable swimming ability and basic comfort in open water is generally sufficient. Most operators provide mask, snorkel, and fins as standard, and many trips include a guide in the water pointing out marine life. Visibility and conditions vary by season — see our Best Time to Visit page for how this maps onto the calendar.

Choosing an operator

  • Check certification and safety standards — PADI or an equivalent recognised certifying body for dive centres, well-maintained equipment, and appropriate guide-to-guest ratios.
  • Ask about marine conservation practices — reputable operators around Mnemba specifically respect the marine conservation area's rules (no touching coral or marine life, controlled group sizes).
  • Confirm what's included — equipment, transport, refreshments, and whether a marine park or conservation fee is charged separately.
