Family Safari from Zanzibar

The four questions parents actually ask, answered

Families screen for constraints before they screen for itineraries. Will the camp take our six-year-old. Is the flight bearable. What does a child actually cost. Is it safe. Almost nobody answers those plainly, so here they are.

Because every safari we run is private, you are never pacing a shared vehicle with strangers. If an afternoon needs to be short, or someone needs to be back at camp by three, your guide adapts and nobody else is inconvenienced. That is the single biggest difference on a family trip.

What children cost, and why

A common assumption is that children travel at half price. On a fly-in safari they do not, and the reason is worth understanding before you get a quote.

Ages 0–4. Park and conservation fees free. No vehicle share — an infant carries no seat cost. Flights and accommodation at the full adult rate. One useful consequence: two adults and an infant price in the 2-pax band, not the 4-pax band. Our booking system gets that right.

Ages 5–15. Park and conservation fees at half the adult rate. Vehicle share, flights and accommodation at full adult rates. Which works out at roughly 88 to 96 per cent of an adult price. That is not a markup — the airfare and the jeep seat are most of the bill on a fly-in safari, and neither halves for a child. The park fees and the bed do fall, and they are the smaller half.

Ages 16 and over. Adult rates across every line.

What defines it

The key elements

You set the rhythm

Private vehicle and guide, so a short afternoon or an early return is a decision rather than a negotiation with other passengers.

A short flight, not a long drive

Flying from Zanzibar avoids the multi-hour road transfer from Arusha, which is where family patience usually runs out.

In the vehicle, at all times

Animals read a vehicle as one large object. Standing on seats, leaning out or getting out anywhere but a designated safe area is not permitted, and your guide will say so.

Camps chosen for families

Many camps are unfenced and wildlife moves through. For families we book properties with secure perimeters or connected family tents, and children are escorted after dark.

Malaria and sun

Discuss paediatric prophylaxis with your doctor six to eight weeks before travel. Camps provide treated nets. Long sleeves and repellent at dusk, hats and high-SPF by day, shoes on around camp.

15kg each, soft bags only

A hard limit on light aircraft, and the constraint families hit first. Hard-shell suitcases will not fit the hold — leave them at your Zanzibar hotel.

Sample itinerary

How a trip like this runs

An example, not a fixed programme. The dates, the tier and the pacing are set around you.

  1. Day 1

    Zanzibar to the Seronera valley

Hotel pickup for the morning flight, landing at Seronera where your guide meets you. Game viewing on the way to the lodge, lunch, check in, then an afternoon drive for as long as everyone is enjoying it.

Meals: Lunch, dinner · Overnight: Serengeti House of Nature (mid-range) or Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (luxury)

  2. Day 2

A full day at your own pace

Built around your family's energy rather than a fixed schedule. An early drive, back through the midday heat to rest or swim, then out again in the late afternoon works well with younger children.

Meals: All meals · Overnight: Same property

  3. Day 3

Dawn drive and back to the beach

A final dawn drive when the predators are still moving, breakfast, check out, and game viewing on the way to the airstrip for the flight to Zanzibar.

    Meals: Breakfast

The itinerary underneath

This runs on the 3-Day Serengeti Safari from Zanzibar

Same days, same guide, same vehicle. What changes is the tier, the room and the small arrangements — not the price of the safari.

Questions

Worth knowing

How does children's pricing actually work?

Children aged 5 to 15 pay half the park and conservation fees. Under-fives pay none and carry no vehicle share at all. Flights and accommodation are charged at the adult rate at every age, because that is what the airline and the camp charge us.

In practice a 5 to 15 year old comes out at roughly 88 to 96 per cent of the adult price. We would rather you knew that from a web page than from a quote that surprises you.

Is a safari safe for young children?

Yes, with the normal precautions. Everyone stays inside the vehicle on game drives — no standing on seats, no leaning out, and no getting out except in designated safe areas. Camps are chosen for families with secure perimeters or connected tents, and children are escorted after dark. Your guide will brief you properly on day one.

Can we adjust the daily schedule around our children?

Completely, and this is the main practical argument for a private vehicle. Back to camp through the midday heat, out again late, or a short afternoon if someone has had enough — your guide adapts and there is nobody else to hold up.

What about malaria and the sun?

Discuss paediatric malaria prophylaxis with your doctor six to eight weeks before you travel — that lead time matters. Camps provide treated mosquito nets. Long sleeves, long trousers and child-safe repellent at dusk; broad-brimmed hats and high-SPF during the day; shoes on around camp for thorns and rough ground.

What are the luggage limits for a family?

15kg per person in a soft bag. It is a hard limit on safari light aircraft, not a guideline, and hard-shell suitcases will not fit the hold. Leave the rest at your Zanzibar hotel — most lodges do same-day laundry, so you need far less than you think.
